CoBloWriMo 27 - Projets

Hey there English Readers ! Google tells me I have gained quite a lot of readers from the US recently. Welcome !
Not all posts are translated, and I won't promise I will make all my posts bilingual from now on - there is a handy little drop-down 'Translate" menu, conveniently placed at the bottom of the right side-bar, which should result in a not too gibberish-y post for you.
I will, however, try to keep posts on this particular project both in French and English.
This will be the first post of (hopefully) a series on making my entry for competition. The theme for this year is : Insects.

I was beyond thrilled when I heard the announcement...
... and then...
...
... NOTHING !
I scratched my head for ideas and found a whole lot of nothing ! How was I so pumped up about the theme and yet totally unable to come up with ways to translate it into matter ?
Thankfully, it didn't last too long. One day I was stuck in a particular place for a long time with no access to my sewing stuff, I forced myself to sit down and think about it. Insects and clothes... what came to my mind ?

Above is the sketch I came up with - and stayed focused on for a few months. I listed the things I wanted to explore and felt would be both interesting for my style and my technical abilities :
  • a corset, but with a complete outfit built around it
  • iridescent beetles. I have lots of beetle elytras left over from the Titania project and want to see them in another context
  • bringing the insect's shape and shell onto the human body
  • dimension and texture
  • hand-printing

I didn't really change my mind or evolve in my project for a few (otherwise busy) months, until I re-watched September's Live Call on FR and started looking for other ideas.
In the meantime, I have spent lots of time in my vegetable garden, and I am now much more familiar with all the little critters one can encounter there. Sunddenly,  not only was I inspired, but my original beetle plan seemed a little dull.
Compare that to this gorgeously graphic minstrel bug.

How about making something different with the May bug, as well ?
So I dug out my sketchbook and scribbled an army of dresses inspired by those, flys, ants, moths, and wasps.

I'll keep posting about my progress on this project - a good old-fashione dress diary. With some luck I won't have forgotten how to do those... So if you want to follow along I recommend signing up for the theoretically weekly newsletter (most likely only bi-monthly now).
